Outsourcing of Product Engineering Solutions

Thursday 30 April 2009 @ 4:04 pm

by Hemal Shrimanker
While research reports suggest that many outsourcing projects have ended up as failures, IT companies continue to feel the pressure to outsource product engineering tasks to offshore software development centers. According to the studies, about 60% of projects fail to achieve the desired results of the client, while about 75% percent of the deals are cut short by the buyers themselves.

Though many engagements fall short, there are various avoidable reasons for it. Many have succeeded in outsourcing product engineering services while some have even built up offshore centers.

Analysts say that it is necessary for client companies to venture out and get references for offshoring partners. Some of them look for quality rather than cost cutting and hence their entire project is budgeted. Some companies want an extended part of their team which can suggest lucrative techniques and recommendations about content and coding techniques as well.

Though the common belief is that most outsourcing providers are looking for cost-cutting, their success is not based upon that entirely. Though 70% of the client companies outsource product engineering services to India, China, Philippines, only those companies become successful who fine the right talent for their work. Sometimes keeping focus away from cost-savings works as a key success factor.

Most US companies find a talent crunch when it comes to the people who are well-versed with IT services and software development within their own region or country; Cost is the second issue which poses problems. Software developers charge heavily than their eastern counterparts. Lack of quality is also a major cause of concern among software companies. For this, outsourcing IT services to offshore software development centers is by far a lucrative and viable option.

Lack of quality is a problem with the east too. Countries like India and Philippines who rely on cheap labor are said to be less qualitative in terms of productivity. But it also depends on the client companies who prefer immediate profit in lieu of quality.

The scope for product engineering solutions outsourcing is vast and holds great possibilities for substantial growth. Many companies can be approached for to maintain quality and precision at only a part of the cost and is waiting to be exploited. It is also pointed out by analysts is that client companies need to have patience and temperance when deciding and approaching their offshoring software development partner. Most of them pose stringent of measures for them and in result do not get a lot of productivity for the same. Also, the remuneration needs to be at least satisfactory so that those who dwell here can be faithful the company for many years to come.

Dual Monitors: Dual-Monitor Taskbar, Dual-Monitor Task Switcher and Other Multi-Monitor Enhancements

Thursday 30 April 2009 @ 3:04 pm

by Alex Fadeyev
1. Introduction
As technology advances with each year, PC displays are becoming cheaper and more compact. In tandem with this development, a growing number of PC users are taking advantage of the power of dual-monitor configuration. This can involve using a dual-headed video adapter, installing two video adapters together or connecting the second monitor via a special USB video hub.

Connecting a second monitor enables users to enjoy the advantages that dual displays provide: expanded screen space and a higher number of visible windows without overlapping. However, the use of two monitors can also lead to some minor but annoying drawbacks:

- Extra time involved in switching and allocating multiple windows between two monitors
- Increased chances of repetitive strain injury (RSI) due to moving the mouse cursor across an expanded desktop
- In both the older OS Windows 2000/XP or modern Windows Vista/2008, it is necessary to transport the mouse cursor back to the primary display every time access to the Taskbar or Start Menu is required (which can exacerbate the above-mentioned RSI problem)
- When switching between windows using Alt+Tab, the Task Switcher window is only displayed on the primary monitor which can be inconvenient
- It is not possible to drag the maximized window from one monitor to another. Instead, it is necessary to restore the window to normal status first, then drag it to another monitor and maximize it there. This can involve a little too much mouse work for such a simple situation!
- The general Maximize button expands a window over its host monitor, which means there’s no quick way to maximize a window over the entire composite desktop

Luckily, there is an all-in-one solution to all of these issues. Actual Window Manager provides 3 extremely handy tools that make work with a dual-monitor system far more productive, easy and comfortable!

2. Dual-monitor Taskbar
The Multi-monitor Taskbar facility is the most important enhancement of the Windows user interface in the dual display environment - it emulates the main Windows Taskbar services on the additional monitor. Therefore, it does not matter which monitor is used as both provide the same constant action to switch between open windows.

In addition to the Taskbar, this facility can also emulate the Start button on the second monitor. This option allows quick access to the contents of the Start Menu, irrespective of which monitor the mouse is currently on. Such a seemingly minor advantage as having the emulated Taskbar partnered by the Start button avoids the usual irritating mouse marathons across the desktop!

In addition, it is possible to choose between two different modes in which the secondary Taskbar can work: individual or mirror. Using the individual mode ensures that both primary and secondary Taskbars only display those windows located on the Taskbar’s host monitor. For example:

- If a window is opened on the 1st monitor, that window has an entry in the Taskbar hosted on the 1st monitor
- If the window is then relocated to the 2nd monitor, its taskbar entry is also relocated to the 2nd monitor’s Taskbar

In mirror mode, each open window has an entry in all Taskbars (i.e. all Taskbars display the same contents).

3. Dual-monitor Task Switcher
The Multi-monitor Task Switcher simultaneously displays the Task Switcher service window on both monitors. This avoids a user having to switch attention from the second monitor when hitting Alt+Tab.

This function is simplicity itself. It’s just another small but effective piece of the jigsaw that leads to a truly great development!

4. Dual-monitor Window Management
Last but not least, the Actual Window Manager can help resolve the problematic positioning of multiple windows within the widened dual-display of the Windows desktop. Windows itself fails to provide a solution other than the ordinary mouse-dragging technique. Actual Window Manager provides a number of simple but neat little tricks:

- The additional button is placed onto each window’s title bar. A left-click of this button instantly places the subject window on the other monitor (i.e. if the window is on the 1st monitor it jumps to the 2nd, and vice versa). There is no need to manually drag it across the entire desktop!
Another benefit is that any window, whether maximized or not, can be moved in such a way.

- Another smart trick is the “Move to monitor” item in the window’s system menu which shows the list of monitors: (the check mark denotes a window’s current monitor).
Although it seems that this menu works in the same manner as the button but it’s a supplement and not a replacement: this menu can be used when a window’s title bar is inaccessible. Example: Imagine that a subject window is on a monitor that is temporarily offline, and that window needs to be present in the visible desktop area. Just activate it by right-clicking the window’s Taskbar entry and add it onto the operational monitor via the “Move to monitor” submenu!

- Finally - the icing on the cake: right-click the Maximize button of any window to maximize it over the desktop. The second right-click restores the subject window to its previous size.

All these features ensure that dual-monitor window management is as fast and convenient (if not more fast and convenient!), as single-monitor operation.

5. Conclusion
As with any great development, dual-monitor configuration is a double-edged sword. However, Actual Window Manager offers 3 expert advantages in its tool set that help compensate most dual-monitor disadvantages. By using the technology, it is possible to achieve the full power and productivity of the dual-display system. Just try the package and never again will you imagine a dual-monitor experience without it!

Why microblogging could be the next email

Thursday 30 April 2009 @ 2:04 pm

by Zeta Editorial
There’s no doubt about it: 2009 is the year Twitter broke. But what’s the point of microblogging and how can it help your business?

You know something’s hit the mainstream when Phillip Schofield mentions it on This Morning. But Twitter’s apparent overnight success took the best part of three years.

A prototype of the microblogging and social networking tool was built in two weeks in March 2006 and was launched publicly that August. A programmer called Jack Dorsey came up with the idea when he was writing software that provided realtime status updates for taxi companies. Twitter eventually became a company in May 2007. It’s estimated that over 1.78 million people are now signed up to the service, compared to just 100,000 a year ago. The company last year turned down a $500 million buyout offer from Facebook.

Its genius is in its simplicity. Users are able to publish messages of 140 characters or less via the web or mobile phones. Collectively, these form a microblog, such at this one from Zeta. Messages - or ‘tweets’ - are read by ‘followers’, who subscribe to your posts and have them delivered to their own Twitter homepage.

The result is a stream of updates on everything from what someone’s doing for lunch to the fact that they’ve just been elected US president.

Twitter may be the best-known microblogging tool but it’s far from being the only one. Facebook’s status updates and wall posts make unwitting microbloggers out of its users. Its recent redesign was a direct response to the growth of Twitter.

Tumblelogs such as tumblr and Soup extend the short-form format to include multimedia content. YonklyJaiku offers an open source take on the genre. Plurk provides a quirky, timeline-based aesthetic. And Yammer, which won last year’s TechCrunch50, is specifically designed to provide an internal microblogging tool for businesses.

With email becoming an increasing burden on people’s time, microblogging offers a compelling business communication solution. “Web 2.0 evangelists… say it can facilitate an open-ended corporate culture that values transparency, collaboration and innovation,” says Forbes.com. “Most important, it can be an effective way to build a customer-centric organisation that not only communicates authentically but also listens to customers and learns from that interaction.”

A tool such as Twitter is ideal for following news on a specific topic or for asking questions of your peers. Meanwhile, being able to update your status on the move benefits employees who need to keep in regular contact with one another: a single text can generate an update that is immediately fed to an entire group of co-workers. With the wealth of access points that microblogs offer - from Firefox add-ons to iPhone applications - it’s an elegant way to keep people connected, irrespective or time zones or technology.

The business-focused Yammer allows companies to host the software themselves but this is the exception, not the rule. Most microblogging services live in the cloud, with all the benefits - and problems - that entails. Twitter, for instance, has grown so rapidly that its servers frequently keel over, resulting in the familiar Fail Whale screen.

It’s also worth considering that microblogging is, essentially, an extremely accessible form of publishing and that your posts can appear in Google search results and across the web. It’s something that this Twitter user resolutely failed to remember, with the result that it cost him his job. There’s also the risk that, if not managed correctly, microblogging serves only to add to your digital clutter - not reduce it.

For many of us, microblogs still have the novelty value of the latest web-based cultural phenomenon. But, like email, tools such as Twitter are destined to become a central part of our working lives. Even if you do use them to update colleagues on your lunch plans.

Coming soon to zeta.net: an exclusive interview with Yammer CEO David Sacks

Windows Vista: Issues After Converting Basic Disk to Dynamic Disk

Thursday 30 April 2009 @ 11:04 am

by mnkstllr
Windows Vista supports Dynamic Disk Volumes for its Business, Enterprise and Ultimate editions. In order to convert Basic Disk to Dynamic Disk, we can simply use ‘Convert to Dynamic Disk’ option of the disk through Disk Management. However converting back a Dynamic Disk to Basic Disk is not usual as it needs disk formatting and causes data loss from partitions. Data in such cases can be recovered using Partition Recovery Software.

Users report that in some cases, after converting a Windows Vista installed disk partition from Basic to Dynamic Disk Volume, certain issues are observed:

Dynamic Disk Volume can’t be removed while users attempt to reinstall Windows Vista. The Delete command which appears at the time of installation .where you want to Install Windows dialog box if user reinstall, Windows is not available anymore.
If Dynamic Disk is to be converted to Basic Disk, all volumes are need to be deleted first and Dynamic Disk is converted to Basic Disk by using Convert to Basic Disk command through Disk Management tool. But in this case, this option becomes unavailable.

In order to solve these issues, users need to first backup all the data and format the volume. If Windows Vista is being reinstalled, the Setup program gives this option. Alternatively, diskpart.exe command can be used remove it. It can be accomplished from command prompt.

Users are advised to carry out the backup process in effective manner. Backup log report must be checked and also backup must be analyzed for all required files. However if partitions lose data when no valid data backup is available, Partition Recovery applications can be used to extract lost information.

Partition Recovery Software is the safe applications to restore lost, missing and damaged partitions’ data. This software scans the affected drive to recover lost information, from Basic as well as Dynamic Disks. The applications are usually designed as read-only and hence can safely carry out recovery. Partition Recovery software is rich in interface. So users can easily use these applications without the aid of any technical knowledge. This software offer several advanced features to ease the process.

Offshore software outsourcing is the most profitable route for the success of many businesses, especially those of Western countries. Unfortunately, the collapse of several banks and some other companies in several sectors, financial feasibility in Western countries had a drastic impact on the relocation of businesses. However, many leading companies are willing to outsource work to countries like India, where labor is cheaper and the quality of service is greater. Cost saving and competency are two ways to achieve success during the recession, and outsourcing is the best channel to achieve both.

Quality of services; how the quality testing of Software Company services being done? Well, you can do by checking your records. Many offshore service providers in India are based on solid foundations and have been serving customers for a long time. Error Message while creating BKF file

Thursday 30 April 2009 @ 11:04 am

by colindolly
Every user maintains a backup of his data on one or more storage media. Operating systems like Windows NT and above allow you to create a backup and save it in BKF (MS Backup File) format. Corruption in BKF files mainly occurs due to file system corruption, improper system, media errors, malicious software like virus and more. In such situations, you need to recover the BKF file data from latest backup. As it is a backup file, in most of the cases the user only creates only one BKF file. To recover and restore the BKF file in such scenarios, he needs to recover it by using effective bkf repair tool.

You might encounter the below error message when you attempt to create a BKF file of some videos:

“The fixed media is full. You cannot back up all of the specified data to this disk device.
The backup operation will stop.”

The above error message mainly appears for the computer systems using FAT or FAT32 file systems. These file systems are compatible with maximum file size of about 4 GB. If you attempt to create a BKF file (of videos more than 4 GB in size) on a FAT partition, the BKF file may get corrupted.

To prevent the occurrence of the above error message, you need to use NTFS file system as it is compatible with large files of size up to 16 Exabytes. You need to convert the file system to NTFS using the below command:

convert /FS=NTFS

To resolve the above error and access the corrupted BKF file, you need to use Microsoft Backup File Repair software. Such applications effectively scan the corrupted BKF files and extract the important information from them. MS Backup Recovery applications do not refer to the size of corrupted BKF files and provide complete repair in all possible scenarios. With highly graphical and interactive user interface these recovery utilities are easy to understand without prior technical knowledge. They also come with detailed graphical documentation to make the repair and recovery experience user-friendly.

Stellar Phoenix BKF Recovery is the most reliable utility that provides powerful Microsoft Backup File Repair. It efficiently scans and repairs the corrupted BKF files. It is compatible with Windows Vista, XP, 2003 and 2000. It also provides BKF File Repair for files created with Backup Exec by VERITAS software. The demo version of this utility is provided on the Stellar’s website.

Colin Dolly is a self employed Internet entrepreneur and product reviewer. Stellar Information Systems Limited, the pioneers of data recovery, announces its bkf repair software launch. Stellar Phoenix BKF Recovery scans and recovers corrupt BKF files. The company has launched it as the all-time solution for corrupt BKF files of Windows 2003, XP and 2000 backup utilities.

Windows Vista: Partition Corrupt and System Stops Responding at Restart

Thursday 30 April 2009 @ 11:04 am

by mnkstllr
Computers running release version of Windows Vista suffer from a limitation related to corrupt partitions. As a result of which, not at initial start, but while restarting, a black screen displays or system stops responding at all. Similar kind of issue is also seen with Windows Vista Service Pack 1, in which Autocheck.exe process hangs. Partition corruption causes data loss. However we can recover it using Partition Recovery Software.

Autocheck.exe is an automated process that runs at each start, if finds errors with the system. The issue lies in the way that Autocheck.exe uses to detect partition corruption. This criterion is entirely different from what is used by NTFS. Hence at initial start, though NTFS marks the partition as damaged, Autocheck.exe doesn’t take it as corrupt and also doesn’t carry out any step to fix it. When the system is restarted, NTFS again follows the same procedure to mark the same partition as corrupted and Autocheck.exe restarts. However, this time system doesn’t behave as expected and a black screen is encountered. If user attempts to log on to the system after canceling the autocheck.exe process, it fails. In release version of Windows Vista, Safe Mode can help in this respect.

In order to resolve this issue, it is recommended to download AIK (Automated Installation Kit) and create Windows PE 2.1 disc to restart the affected computer system.
For Partition Recovery, we can use chkdsk/f command.
If corruption problem persists, we need to format the partition after backing up the data.
To avoid the same problem occur in future, corresponding hot fix can be installed.

If backup fails to restore required partition information, Partition Recovery Software can be used instead. These are the graphically rich applications to scan and recover lost data. The applications follow up definite recovery approach using scanning algorithms. This software benefit us in terms of quality features, safe data conduct, secure scanning and complete data restoration. Use of these applications and Partition Recovery procedure follow up is very easy because of the interactive interface they have.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is the powerful application to restore damaged, missing or lost partitions. The software supports Windows Vista, Server 2003, XP and 2000. It is a complete Partition Recovery Software. The application offers intuitive interface. It can be used with FAT16, FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5 file systems. It offers advances recovery options like RAW File Recovery, Create Image, File Filter and lots others.

Author describes the problems which occurred at the time of vista partition corruption and suggested to use partition recovery software. Also gives some tips to prevent your data from loss at the time of partition recovery.
